The pristine beaches of Sanibel, Florida, known worldwide for their seashells, are facing a less natural addition to their sands: cigarette butts. In response to growing concerns over litter and visitor enjoyment, Sanibel City Councilman Richard Johnson has proposed a discussion on banning smoking at city-maintained beaches.

During a recent city council meeting, Johnson expressed his frustration with the waste, stating, “The number one item that we pick up are cigarette butts. Our beaches are there for everyone to enjoy, and I think smoking on our beaches takes away from that enjoyment in some cases.” His sentiments were echoed by several beachgoers who described the litter as “the worst thing I see” and supported a potential ban if smokers fail to clean up after themselves.
While some visitors argue that responsible smoking in open spaces should be permitted, the move aligns with broader regional trends. In June, neighboring Lee County banned smoking and vaping in all its parks and beaches, though this rule does not currently extend to Sanibel’s city beaches. City leaders have agreed to place the potential ban on a future city council agenda for further deliberation. “I think we need to take a look at this, and it may be something that we want to take up,” Johnson concluded.
